Swamiji, in his meditation sessions, facilitates the participants to experience, firsthand, the silent state of one's mind. He takes one through the processes of relaxation of the body and the stilling of the mind. He has integrated the whole sequence of meditation, starting from the gross material aspects and ending in the subtle realms, in every session. He makes one sojourn in the physical, mental and the subtler spiritual realms and experience an increased awareness and the joy of existence.
His meditations are loaded with values of the Higher Quality. Through them one is made fit to live life fully and effectively. They make one constantly remember that one's roots extend into the mysterious Divine Realm that is beyond the grasp of the logical mind, where techniques do not work. They need full involvement and openness. They are not for the casual or the curious, or, the one in a hurry to achieve goals. They are for the real seeker who is yearning for the touch of the light, the wisdom that knows everything.
Swamiji never gets tied up with the details of any one technique. His meditations are spontaneously formulated, integrated and are generous in nature and intent. He freely leads everyone into the higher states of consciousness in every meditation.
Swamiji understands the state in which one comes to him after a brief conversation and looking deeply into the person with an uncanny vision he chooses the meditation that is right for that moment. He begins the meditation by saying : "sit erect - close your eyes. Be silent". The meditation starts from where one's mind is stuck. He pulls it up out of the pain, out of the negativity, its hidden roots in the unconscious, through recall of the events, experiences and memories from the past. Thus, he first makes the mind "spend them", dissipate them. Then he makes the mind come to the present by confronting and staying with the desires, fears, hopes for the future, and finally, he makes one dwell in the present, natural, comfortableness in a prayerful, worshipful, conscious state of alertness, awareness, accepting the grace of the present moment.
A group meditation session with Swamiji may include dancing, clapping of hands and singing or chanting. There is always an expression of joy. Life is celebrated without inhibitions. The chanting is never monotonous. There are gaps of silent spells. This results in total awareness. The whole body mind listens to the sounds and also the silence. Thoughts and emotions are not allowed to sink into the subconscious mind. They are brought up to the conscious level and allowed to flow out. He encourages us to give vent to all our feelings as they come up without suppressing them. No need of faking or stiffling, or, trying to satisfy others. In the beginning, there is action, talking, singing... any expression, and so, catharsis takes place.
Then, we are asked to forgive those who have recently upset us, or, created the emotional flare-up, or, hatred; and thank those who have given us joy, or , fulfillment. Eventually we come to a state where we treat both good and bad similarly.
Since the meditator reaches the subtler states of consciousness his mind is kept alert, intent, full of certitude in the vision of one's True Nature. It is kept alive but silent, fit to receive insights. It is made receptive, pure, fearless and calm so that meditation can happen in a natural way.
After these mental exercises Swamiji may give the mind a "name", a single word, or a string of words, which he chooses spontaneously. `This is, in effect, a vague thought with no particular meaning. The mind catches hold of the sound of the chosen, `name' and stops wandering.
The "name" is chanted slowly at first; then faster, then again slowed down, and finally no more chanting. It subsides into silence. There is outward and inward silence. All the while, during chanting, you are asked to have the "idea" of the "Quality aspects", the good attributes of your" deity", the Divine, in your mind, though it will be vague and mysterious.
While engaged in chanting, whether loudly, or, silently, we are asked to shift the focus of the idea of the quality of the deity, the Divine image, on to the different parts of our body, starting from the feet. When our "focusing' reaches the mid-brow, in the forehead, in between the eye-brows, we are to let-go completely, so that the mind activity is quietened. As the field of action and the reflective aspects of the mind fade the mood of reverence, the prayerful attitude dawns. This is not a form of worshipping a deity, but a prayerful contemplation that turns, transforms into meditation.
Swamiji uses many more techniques. His meditations are not based on any particular religious tradition. They are lessons in the true spiritual discipline that helps one live life without inhibitions as a celebration of the mysterious Divine principle that commands the universal processes.
Every meditation session ends in stillness and silence - no effort, no goal, no anticipation of particular results. Meditation happens. You are on a "voyage of silence". You will feel blissful, like a baby sleeping in the arms of the mother, says Swamiji.
Be open and trust the Divine in daily life. You will know the meaning of the words: "God is Love". Swamiji's meditations make us feel the energy of life in us as the Divine Energy of Existence which pervades and enlivens all that is in the universe. We tend to become one with the mysterious, pure consciousness, and realise that Life is Awareness and that a meditative living is the right way to live.
